SUMMER’S
ALMOST HERE We’re in the middle of an avalanche of press releases,
e-mails and faxes about the upcoming summer arts season. While
all this will be compiled and organized to serve your summer
entertainment needs in our Summer Guide (publication
date June 5), a couple of items caught my eye. First, some
bad news received a few weeks ago: The Epiphany Theater
Company and Saratoga Springs have come to a—temporary,
at least—parting of the ways. This summer’s planned debut
of Drew Sach’s I Am Not Breakfast has been reduced
from a planned four-week run to a three-night, subscriber-only
workshop presentation. And next year’s season (2008-2009)
is cancelled; they hope to return the following year. Meanwhile,
in Chatham, the PS/21 tent/performance space is gearing
up for an even bigger season than last year. There will be
theater, and dance, and film, and, well, a little bit of everything,
actually. It’s an eclectic program; I like the fact that their
musical film series, for example, stretches from singing musicals
(High Society, featuring Bing and Frank) to dancing
musicals (Astaire in Swing Time, Bacon in Footloose)
to music dramas (The Red Violin). For complete details,
look for the Summer Guide. And if you’re part of an art organization
with a summer program, be sure to send your schedule to calendar@metroland.net.
BUT SPRING’S NOT OVER YET That peculiar, sometimes public,
sometimes private gallery and arts space in Troy, 51 3rd
Street (located at 51 3rd St., duh), will be hosting two
nights of touring experimental videos this Wednesday (May
14) and next (May 21) at 7 PM. The first program is Action
News, a selection of videos, films and music from
Philadelphia. The following Wednesday will feature a video
screening and special live performance titled The Free
Translators, starring Miss Reading and Miss
Recognition. Admission appears to be free, but it’s hard
to tell. The press release arrived over the (electronic) transom
with no contact info.
NEED A JOB? The Arts Center of the Capital Region (265
River St., Troy) is looking for a manager of education and
outreach programs. This would be an “energetic, organized
individual to develop and implement programs, and coordinate
outreach initiatives.” (In other words, someone not like me.)
For a complete job description contact the Arts Center at
273-0552. Hurry, as resumes and cover letters are due by Tuesday
(May 13).

Sacred
Sounds, Sacred Space
St.
Joseph’s Church on Ten Broeck Street in Albany’s Arbor Hill
neighborhood was filled with music last Sunday afternoon (May
4) as the Christian Arts Choir and Orchestra performed Handel’s
Messiah. The performance raised funds for the continuing
restoration of the historic structure, which, after nearly
having its roof collapse, has been repaired under the auspices
of the City of Albany and the Historic Albany Foundation.
