Beardslee Castle

Route 5, Little Falls, (315) 823-3000, In this historic castle in Central New York (complete with ghosts, or at least abundant rumors of), dine in one of five intimate rooms on creative cuisine that changes nightly, features fresh ingredients and spans Mediterranean, Italian, Asian and Southwestern influences and beyond. Daniel’s at Ogdens

42 Howard St., Albany, 694-5320. Brothers Gabriel (“Daniel”) and Alex Atsilov are back in a fine-dining setting with a panini-intensive lunch menu and such dinner items as sea bass in a saffron lemon cream sauce, spinach-stuffed veal and Brazilian-style lamb stuffed with filet mignon. As always, the Israeli platter offers the area’s best falafel. Full bar. Serving lunch 11:30-4 Mon-Fri, dinner 5-11 Mon-Fri, 5-midnight Sat. AE, D, MC, V. $$$$


26 Henry St., Saratoga Springs, 587-9463. Global-comfort-foods menu includes fish, game, beef, poultry, pasta and chops. A “whatever” offering is provided in each course. A “chef’s table” in the pantry, offers small parties a unique perspective from which to dine. Full bar. Takeout and off-premises catering available. Serving 5:30-close Tue-Sat. 6½ Caroline St., Saratoga Springs, 587-4236. The eclectic menu boasts specialties from around the world. Look for the burritos, Thai, Mexican, Middle Eastern and vegetarian specialties as well as pizza and home-cooked snacks—including the well-known “Dough Boy.” Takeout available. Serving 11:30-10 Mon, 11:30-2 AM Tue-Wed, 11:30-3 AM Thu, 11:30-4 AM Fri-Sat. Sun 4-10PM. AE, MC, V. $

Helsinki Café

284 Main St., Great Barrington, (413) 528-3394, Yes, there’s Scandinavian fare such as gravlax and borscht and pickled herring, but there’s also an eclectic mix of fusion items and new vegetarian dishes—served in a comfortable, intimate café setting with a live-music venue featuring roots rock, folk, jazz and more. Try Anni’s Smorgasbord to really get a taste of the place. Full bar, private parties, takeout available. Serving daily 11-10:30 (later in the adjoining nightclub). D, MC, V. $$$

The Larkin Restaurant & Lounge

199 Lark St., Albany, 463-5225. West African chef Serigne Sow creates an eclectic cuisine blending Italian, French, African, Asian and American influences. Specialties include seafood linguine in a sauce of white wine, garlic, basil and tomato, sautéed rainbow trout with pine nuts and currants, and mussels in Thai curry with lemongrass. Full bar.
