Winther and Vladimir Pleshakov made beautiful music together
at their Pleshakov Music Center, a performance space in
Hudson; longtime WMHT-TV filmmaker Steve Dunn completed
his acclaimed documentary about the restoration of the
state Capitol, Flood of Light—and was promptly fired
in an orgy of budget cuts; Albany’s Madison Theater
closed without notice, leaving puzzled would-be moviegoers
waiting on the sidewalk; Patrick Whelan turned his life
into stories through Meme Black’s weekly workshops,
intended for homeless writers, at the Women’s Building;
and curator Sharon Bates made the Albany International
Airport Gallery a challenging and fascinating place for
travelers leaving or returning to the area to experience
art.

Allard made a valiant attempt at kickstarting a new art
gallery in Troy, but after a splashy and promising debut,
Les Bohemes folded; an eccentric and artful window display
at 51 3rd St. in Troy sparked the curiosity of passersby
and the ire of some residents who believed the informal
exhibit insensitive to the historic quality of the neighborhood;
artists including Michelle Corbet and Michael Pape wrestled
with red tape to establish an arts district in Saratoga
Springs; dance doyenne Maude Baum celebrated the 30th anniversary
of her eba dance troupe and theater; and painter Richard
Callner’s 50-year career was commemorated by the Albany
Institute of History and Art with a lavish retrospective
of his vibrant expressionist work.
