New
York State of Protest
The
Peoples State of the State address in January called
for a fair budget, rather than cutting programs for those
most in need; in April, farmworkers marched for rights that
most other workers in the state have, including regular
days off, overtime, and collective bargaining rights; on
April 1, 30,000 health-care workers brought Albany traffic
to a standstill responding to Patakis proposed $2
billion cuts in health care; 1,500 SUNY and CUNY students,
many of whom took three weeks to walk to Albany from their
campuses, attended a rally at the Capitol in March to call
for a tutition freeze; tens of thousands rallied against
cuts in public education at the Empire State Plaza in May.
