The
Philadelphia Orchestra
The
Philadelphia Orchestra’s summer season at SPAC goes into
full swing this week—and don’t forget the new starting time
(8 PM).
Tonight (Thursday, Aug. 2), guest conductor Erich Kunzel
will lead the fabulous Philadelphians in a Broadway-themed
pops program. The emphasis is on rock musicals, with songs
from Hair, Tommy, Phantom of the Opera
and Mamma Mia (among other nifty shows).
Tomorrow night (Friday, Aug. 3) maestro Charles Dutoit will
conduct, and guests Renaud and Gautier Capuçon (pictured)
will join the orchestra for a program of works by Prokofiev,
Brahms and Rimsky-Korsakov.
Saturday (Aug. 4), pianist Emanuel Ax will be featured on
Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 22, and the orchestra will also
perform works by Weber, Stravinsky and Ravel.
All three performances of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Aug.
2-4, at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (Saratoga Spa
State Park, Saratoga Springs) begin at 8 PM. Tickets are
$70 to $18 (lawn). For more info, call 587-3330.
Angelique
Kidjo
World-music
superstar Angelique Kidjo headlines the Washington Park
stage Monday night.
Why do we call her a superstar? The award-winning, Benin-born
singer—who is now based in New York City—has won fans around
the world with her catchy blend of Afropop, Congolese rumba,
jazz and gospel. She has served as an official United Nations
goodwill ambassador, long before Angelina Jolie got into
the act. She’s performed with the likes of Vernon Reid,
Alicia Keys and Josh Groban. And one of her own compositions
was featured on an episode of The Simpsons.
Beatdown
Collective, aka one-man band PJ Katz, will open the show.
Angelique Kidjo, with guest Beatdown Collective, will perform
Monday (Aug. 6) at 6 PM at the Washington Park Lakehouse
(Albany). Admission is free; there is no rain location.
For more info, call 434-3861.
Sing-Along
Fiddler on the Roof
“Matchmaker,
matchmaker, make me a match/find me a find/catch me a catch!/Matchmaker,
matchmaker, look in your book, and find me the perfect match!”
You already know the lyrics—now you have the opportunity
to boast your vocal range, too, by attending MASS MoCA’s
screening of the classic film Fiddler on the Roof
this weekend. The whole point of going is to sing along!
Leave it to those fun-loving event planners at MASS MoCA
to come up with such ingenuity. We wish there was something
more to say about Sing-Along Fiddler on the Roof,
but really, what is there? A classic movie + terrific songs
+ singing along = great time for the fam.
Sing-Along Fiddler on the Roof will take place at
MASS MoCA (86 Marshall St., North Adams, Mass.) on Saturday
(Aug. 4) at 8:30 PM. Admission to this event is $10. For
more information or to order tickets, call (413) 662-2111
or visit massmoca.org.
