The
Films of Christine Vachon
|
|
The
current landscape of independent cinema would
be a lot less colorful were it not for Christine
Vachon. Over the last 15 years, Vachon has served
as producer or executive producer on dozens
of little films that became big films, and helped
bring a number of gay- and lesbian-themed films
to the masses. A sample of her handiwork: director
Larry Clark’s infamous 1995 film Kids;
director Todd Solondz’ equally infamous Happiness
(1998); the excellent film adaptation of
Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001); and
1999’s Boys Dont Cry, for which Hilary
Swank took home the Oscar for Best Actress.
(Her current film is Infamous, another
examination of the Truman Capote story.) This
week, the New York State Writers Institute will
screen two of Vachon’s most important films—Boys
Don’t Cry and Poison, her first major
film, from 1991—and welcome Vachon for a question-and-answer
session on Friday night.
Poison
will be screened at 7:30 PM tonight (Thursday,
Oct. 26) at UAlbany’s Page Hall (135 Western
Ave., Albany). The film is rated NC-17. Boys
Don’t Cry screens at 7 PM tomorrow (Friday,
Oct. 27), also at Page Hall. That film is rated
R. Following the screening, Christine Vachon
will speak and answer questions from the audience.
Both events are free and open to the public.
