Tillie’s Punctured Romance

This is the regional re-premiere of a film that originally debuted about, oh, 90 years ago. Mack Sennett’s Tillie’s Punctured Romance was the first feature-length comedy when it was released in 1914, and the “king of comedy” spared no effort to make it slaptacular, adapting a hit Broadway farce and casting three stars: Charlie Chaplin (pictured), Mabel Normand and Marie Dressler. And, of course, the Keystone Cops. It was hugely popular.

The print to be shown Saturday at MASS MoCA is new, the result of a painstaking, long-term restoration. Tillie hasn’t been seen in a version this complete—or this completely funny—in six or seven decades. There is also the added attraction of live music by the Tillie’s Nightmare Ragtime Band. Featuring Ken Winokur of the Alloy Orchestra, Tillie’s Nightmare have won raves for their authentic (and madcap) score for the picture.

Tillie’s Punctured Romance will be screened Saturday (Aug. 12) at 8:30 PM at MASS MoCA (1040 MASS MoCA Way, North Adams, Mass.) in Courtyard C (weather permitting) or the Hunter Center (weather not permitting). Tickets are $18. For more info, call (413) 662-2111.
